Its not like I don't have enough time on my hands these days people, so be careful what kind of suggestions you throw out there. I'm just bored (and dumb) enough to take you up on them.
Anyway you can all thank Adam for this.
So based on some feedback I received from last post, namely Adam's remark that I should track my non-shavingness, I've decided to start-up another blog here.

I'm not trying to make light of the whole financial meltdown thing that our country has been going through the past couple of years. And I fully understand that for a lot of people, being out of work has some very serious consequences. Thank God I'm not in that boat...at least not yet.
Nope, for me being unemployed has been a great experience. Aside from the 15-20 days of vacation time I've had each of the last 13 years (and which I rarely used more than 3-4 days of at a single time), I've been going non-stop since graduating from college. So the past few weeks have been something completely different for me. And so now, without further ado, here's my Top 10 Things About Being Unemployed: 10. Not having to shave anymore - really cannot express enough just how much I hate shaving. 9. No more hair products - I've been putting mousse or gel or something into my hair each and every morning for the past 20 years. Aside from expediting my eventual hair loss (just look at my brother Jorge) it also leaves a nasty residue all over my pillow. 8. Sweat Pants! - I believe I've said enough about this topic already in last week's post. 7. More choices for lunch - the area where I worked was possibly the worst area in NYC for decent food choices. The company I worked for had a cafeteria, but that was rarely an option...except when they had the grilled chicken salad thing going. 6. Getting stuff done around the house - we've been in our new home since August and as many little projects as I've taken care of around here, there's always more to do. The weekends are just too busy around here to actually get things done. 5. No more commuting - on the weekends without any traffic I can make it into NYC in about 12 minutes. On the weekdays during the morning and evening rush hours it would take me over an hour each way. Mind you that's driving to Harrison and taking the PATH train, but still its ridiculous. 4. Catching up on my soaps - just kidding, I don't watch soap operas. But there is a lot of good TV shows out there that I record on a nightly basis. Now I have time during the day to catch up on those. 3. Not having to listen to Shane and Issear arguing about random bullshit - yeah, I'm calling out these 2 guys, but in reality there was a lot of inane chatter I had to deal with on a daily basis. I'm sure most of the people I worked with are probably thinking that most of the BS around the office was coming out of my mouth, but I beg to differ. 2. 2 PLY TOILET PAPER! - the TP in the bathrooms at my old company was pathetic. I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 1/2 ply, but that's what it seemed like. Here at Casa Navas we go with 2-ply...Quilted Norther to be exact. 1. Spending more time with the kids - #s 2-10 have some truth to them, but mostly I put them on the list because they're funny. This 1 is the real deal. Because of my commute our morning routine around here used to be a 'beat-the-clock' type of thing each morning. No time for conversations or watching a quick cartoon. It was go-go-go from the moment the alarm went off. And it was pretty much the same thing at the end of the day. Because we're not rushing around anymore I'm actually spending an extra 2-3 hours per day with the kids. You can't put a price tag on that! OK, so I have been hanging around the house a lot lately. No real reason to get all dressed up. So its only natural that I'm spending a lot of time in sweat pants these days...right? Right?
Yeah, wifey doesn't think so. She's been making little comments here and there. Like over the weekend when she was doing the laundry and noted "I've washed like 10 pairs of sweat pants!" And on Sunday when we were headed to my brother Diego's house to watch the SuperBowl and have some pizza (mind you, not to my mother's house for our weekly Sunday Night dinner, but to my brother's to watch football and eat pizza), and she said I had to wear jeans or something other than sweat pants. I'm not talking about your basis sweat pants either. You know the ones that are in regular colors and have the drawstring waist and no pockets. I'm talking more like Track / Lounging Pants with pockets and (racing) stripes down the sides. Maybe a little zipper action down by the calf. These are like 'Dress' Sweat Pants. You get the picture. Anyway I like my sweat pants. And if I were actually wearing any pants at all right now they would most likely be sweat pants. Now try and get that picture out of your head! I woke up this morning at 5:40 AM to the phone ringing. I was so excited to get that early morning call because I knew it was from my daughter's school telling me that it would be a Snow Day!!! They actually said it was a delayed opening, but when your kid is in AM Kindergarten that gets out at 11:30, delayed opening means no school.
So now I'm trying to decide what we're going to do all day. Possible activities include: building a snow fort, toasting marshmallows by the fireplace, making a snow man, ice sculpting, or sitting on the couch watching TV! Hmmm, too soon to tell which way the day will go. I remember snow days when I was a kid. I distinctly remember staying up all night a few times with my brothers watching the snow pile up knowing that we'd get the following day off from school and would be able to sleep in. I remember all the kids in the neighborhood coming out of their houses ready for the the inevitable snow ball fight that would be going down. I remember walking out to Bloomfield Ave to throw snowballs at passing buses, and even a few times trying to hold onto the back of buses and ski down the street. Wow, I don't know who's more excited about the Snow Day...me or the kids! Here are some pics of the day. |
AuthorSo those of you who know me know that I like to tell stories. Not short stories either, but long detailed stories, usually about the crazy stuff that happens to me on a daily basis. Well since I have some time on my hands these days and not as much of an audience as I used to have, I figured this would be a great way to keep getting these stories out. Archives
